Newbery Winners No One Has Reviewed

Won't someone take on the following titles? We still don't have a single review of:

Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt (1983)
Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt (1967)
Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith (1958)
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham (1956)
The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong (1955)
Rabbit Hill by Robert Lawson (1945)
Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes (1944)
Daniel Boone by James Daugherty (1940)
Waterless Mountain by Laura Adams Armer (1932)
Smoky, the Cowhorse by Will James (1927)
Shen of the Sea by Arthur Bowie Chrisman (1926)

  1. It's almost a crime that no one has read Dicey's Song yet. I've read it before, but it's been a while... maybe I'll have to visit it again. Thanks for doing this, Sandy. I was wondering.

  2. I've actually been watching this too, Sandy, and I thought there were a few more unreviewed titles on the list, but maybe I am wrong (my list is at work and I am at home). I see someone did Johnny Tremain today; a great book that my son had to read in middle school.

My academic library curriculum collection has all the Newbery winners, and I bought replacement copies of as many of the older, more worn books as I could last year. I got lovely replacements for Shen of the Sea (1968 reprint) and Smoky, the Cowhorse (1954 reprint) and plan to review them when time permits (between the five book clubs and advance copy reviews I have to keep up with! Maybe during spring break next month...

  3. There's a lot of books that only have one review - and a rather short review that doesn't really tell us the kinds of things *I* want to know about the book, too. Like is this appropriate for my 11 year old? Interesting? Outdated? Too "girly" for my son, too violent for my 6 year old daughter?

Looking at the titles where there are a bunch of different reviews (like "The Tale of Despereaux" or "The Higher Power of Lucky") is fascinating. Even the reviewers I didn't agree with brought up some really interesting points.

  5. Sharon, the original post is from over a year ago - every one of the books on the list has now been reviewed. But hey, the more reviews, the merrier - join the blog and you can post them yourself here!
