Introduction

I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Moni and I'm a Youth Services Libarian. I've only been doing this for a little over a year and before that I was a science librarian. So, as you can imagine, I hadn't read very much juvenile fiction before I started my current job. So when I started I decided that I was going to start by reading through the Newberry winners. I havent' been reading Newberry winners exclusively (and sometimes I need to read an adult fiction book) but here are the ones I've managed to read so far:

1. Criss-Cross 2006
2. Kira Kira 2005
3. Crispin; cross of lead. 2003
4. The Giver. 1994
5. Maniac Magee. 1991
6. The Slave Dancer. 1974
7. A Wrinkle in Time. 1963

I think my favorites have been:
Criss Cross
Crispin
Maniac Magee

I would love to hear what others have read :)

You know, I loved Crispin and Manic Magee, but I just didn't get Criss-Cross. Maybe *you* can explain it to me. :)

Oops, Maniac Magee (forgot the second "A")

Yeah, it was a little strange in that it didn't really have a cohesive storyline (that I can remember, anyway). I think I remember finishing it going, "huh?" But as I think about it I really like the imagery that it left in my mind. I will have to take a look at it again and see if I can come up with a better explanation :)

You know, I read constantly as a child, but I'm a little surprised at how few Newbery winners I actually read. Maybe I was too busy with Nancy Drew?

Here's what I've read - for the most part, over 30 years ago:

1. The Hero and the Crown (I think I read this in college when I discovered Robin McKinley...I loved Sunshine, which was an adult fantasy published just a few years ago).
2. Bridge to Terebithia (I read this last year, at age 42, when picking titles off a 'banned book' list). I just saw a movie preview for this last week!
3. Julie of the Wolves
4. From the Mixed Up Files
5. A Wrinkle in Time
6. Island of the Blue Dolphins (I remember being disturbed by this as a child, but not why...should be interesting to look at it again).
7. The Witch of Blackbird Pond
8. King of the Wind

Sandy I was the same way! I read through all of the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Little House books but didn't manage to read any Newberry winners! And I also didn't read Little Women which some people I work with are simply astounded by. :)
