More Controversy about the Newbery Award-Winners!
A friend just sent me these links - first, a recent article in the School Library Journal, by Anita Silvey: Has the Newbery Lost Its Way? (subtitled "Snubbed by Kids, Disappointing to Librarians, the Recent Winners Have Few Fans"), with the following response: The Best Book No Kid Wants to Read.

Popular (with apologies to Steven Schwartz), because the Newbery isn't like a state's "children's choice" award.
you should also check out slj.com/heavymedal. it's a new blog that i'm doing with a colleague. the colleague, nina lindsay, chair of last year's newbery, wrote a very detailed response to the article.
Oooo... love all the controversy! I admit the last choice befuddled me, but overall I think I'd rate the same number of "weak winners" in each decade...
